Microsoft Project Network Diagram Early Start

This kind of information is normally depicted using a slack bar, and I would suggest that you start with that.  When a Gantt view is active, you can insert a built-in Slack bar by checking the box in the Bar Styles group of the Format ribbon.

The built-in bar depicts free slack which is customary and provides intuitive information, but it does not generally correspond to the late dates.  If you still want to see late dates, then you need to modify the "From" and "To" fields accordingly in the Bar Styles dialog.  Finally, be sure to rename your new bar style (e.g. to "Total Slack") if you want it to remain permanently.

I wouldn't have much use for this approach in my practice, as I can't remember ever needing to show late dates generally in a bar chart.  The charts are crowded enough already with baselines and text.  More detail doesn't always help.

Good luck.

Perhaps you have not explored the functionality of MSP sufficiently because you are suggesting creating fields/columns which are already there, built in. The early and late start and finishes are in the schedule table. View, Tables, Schedule Table.

Bars appear on the chart according to Format, Bar Styles.

Formatting changes the current view, so it is better to leave the standard Gantt chart as original, and make a copy of the view and then change formatting in the copy.

There are many ways to depict the start and finish of the bars.

For example (from Stephen Devaux's book Total Project Control), this is the schedule table, and the grey bars are late start to late finish, and stacked on row 2. It is interesting to note that the predecessor arrows go from the late bars for the critical tasks and from the early bars for noncritical. AFAIK there is no way to change that.

That's good advice from Trevor.

By the way, Trevor, the link arrows can be manipulated, but it requires abandoning reliance on the standard views and bars.

Hi Trevor,

Your way sounds good, but I'm not getting the hang of it. I copied the tasks in your example, then went to Tables > Schedule. While I did get the early start/fin and late start/fin cols, I did not get the double bars in your example. Also, the late start/fin dates fill in automatically, and cannot be changed. Not certain of what is going on. Would appreciate further comments.

Thanks,

  1. The early and late dates are automatically computed by Project according to the logic in your schedule.  (Search for CPM forward pass and CPM backward pass to better understand.)
  2. Trevor got his bars by manipulating the Bar Styles dialog.  (Right-click on an empty part of the bar chart and select "Bar Styles").  I was able to duplicate the appearance of his by inserting a row for the late bar as shown.  Note the row number for the new bar as well as the non-default values to insert for the From and To fields.
  3. The Critical bar style can be added automatically using the "Critical Tasks" checkbox on the Format ribbon. (though I admit I had to modify it to get the link arrows that Trevor had.)

Thanks,

I will ck it out. But, I was sorry to hear that the late start & fin dates were auto set by logic in my schedule, rather than by manual input. The problem is that I'm trying to work with early and late start/fin dates of a related party in developing my own schedule. Other than these dates, my schedule is completely different. At any rate, thanks for enlightening me on the "logic" of the process. I may use it when other parties are not involved.
